
The wooden sea defences built in the late '50s at Happisburgh, a wonderful village on the North Norfolk coast, have been falling into disrepair over the last few years, and large chunks of the sandy cliffs are regularly falling into the sea. Over the last 15 years over 25 properties have been lost - owners get no compensation. The uncertainty over the future shape of the coastline has had a terrible impact on the community - property values have been affected, people feel trapped and abandoned. Read more »
But there is hope - we contributed £50,000 to emergency works being carried out by North Norfolk District Council in March 2007 allowing them to extend their works by at least 25%, significantly improving the protection given to Happisburgh's cliffs. However more work is needed for a longer-term solution, and that needs funding.
